Three Problems Associated With Tooth Gaps

As you age, you may develop problems with a molar or two that may cause tooth gaps due to the need to having the molars extracted. Since these teeth are in the back of your mouth, you may opt to have them pulled rather than invest in expensive dental restorative work. However, saving your back teeth is detrimental in maintaining your oral health as well as keeping up your appearance.

Three Reasons to Avoid Tooth Gaps Between Your Teeth

Eating Problems
While losing one molar may not affect your enjoyment of food, several missing teeth can make it difficult to chew a good steak or any other firm food. You may find yourself giving up the items you have always liked in favor of softer foods that are easier to chew properly. This switch can take place gradually so that you don’t even realize that you’ve changed your habits.

Appearance Problems
If you have a tooth pulled instead of having it crowned or replaced by an implant, your other teeth will eventually shift, often causing visible spaces among your other teeth. While this shifting affects the appearance of your smile, it can also lead to more tooth decay due to the food that gets trapped in the spaces. This trapped food can also contribute to gum disease. Having your teeth pulled may be less costly in the short term, but the practice can end up being much more expensive over the years.

Dental Implant Expenses
If possible, you should allow your dentist to save your tooth with a crown or other dental appliance. When a tooth is too far gone to be saved, you can invest in an implant. A metal screw is placed in your gum and a crown is eventually attached to a special abutment. Your smile will look better, and your teeth and gums should be healthier.

Many dental techniques now exist that can prevent you from actually losing teeth. Whenever possible, save a tooth rather than having it pulled. In the long term, it’s better for your health and your finances.
